Recorda Labs releases documentation framework for AI-assisted music copyright registration
Tool generates the exact disclosure language required by the U.S. Copyright Office and the standard now shared by BMI, ASCAP, and SOCAN, as two closely watched court rulings on AI music training are expected this month.
Recorda Labs today released a documentation tool addressing a specific, increasingly common problem: how a musician working with AI-generated material actually proves the human authorship that copyright registration now requires.
Since 2023, the U.S. Copyright Office has required applicants to disclose AI involvement in any assisted work, describing the human contribution in the application's "Author Created" field and excluding AI-generated material in a separate "Limitation of the Claim" section. In October 2025, BMI, ASCAP, and SOCAN aligned their own registration policies around the same underlying standard, agreeing to accept compositions that combine AI-generated content with real human authorship, while continuing to reject work that is entirely AI-generated.
The Recorda Labs tool generates draft language for both required fields directly from a project's own production documentation: session history, who performed what, and which elements were retained from the original AI generation. It does not file applications or provide legal advice. It prepares the specific disclosure language a registration requires, for review before submission. "Musicians who work with AI tools increasingly know they need to disclose that use. Very few know what that disclosure is actually supposed to look like on the application itself. We built this because the requirement already exists. Almost nobody has a clear way to meet it," said Sven MacNeil, founder of Recorda Labs.
The release comes as two closely watched court cases threaten to reshape the legal landscape around AI-generated music. A federal court in Massachusetts has a summary-judgment hearing scheduled this month on whether Suno's use of copyrighted recordings in training its AI model constitutes fair use, in a case brought by Sony Music. A parallel case in Munich, brought by the German rights society GEMA, is scheduled for a verdict on July 31st. Neither addresses the authorship question the Recorda Labs tool responds to directly, but both are expected to intensify scrutiny of AI-originated music industry-wide.
